The World’s Oldest Republic

Nestled in the heart of Italy, San Marino holds the honor of being the oldest sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world. It was established in AD 301 by Romans escaping persecution for preaching Christianity, and the republic has held its own since largely thanks to an ongoing policy of neutrality in foreign affairs.

Travelers have long been charmed by San Marino’s stunning panoramas – rolling hills nestled at the foot of the Apennines; views that extend off to the shimmering surface of the Adriatic sea. The fertile soil of Emilia Romagna can be tasted in each glass of Tessano wine. If you are lucky enough to travel here in the springtime, be sure to check out the lively Formula One Grand Prix race, held at San Marino’s Imola racetrack each year – just don’t forget your earplugs.
With San Marino’s temperate Mediterranean climate, outdoor activities are always a pleasure here. Horseback riding and biking can all be enjoyed on the countryside’s hilly, pine-forested terrain. Fishing and sailing are a great draw too, sailing enthusiasts should check out the July sailing regatta ‘Ore di San Marino.’ It’s a perfect place to breathe in the fresh alpine air of this relaxing and underrated European gem.
