After the great Hanshin Earthquake in January 1995, big parts of the city had to be reconstructed. This led to a - for Japan - unusually wide open city. The Earthquake Memorial Museum was built to commemorate the tragic event and to educate visitors about earthquakes and disaster prevention. The museum includes a large screen theater with realistic images of the earthquake's destructiveness, a documentary film about the recovery process, lots of information and various interactive games about disaster prevention. I highly recommend paying a visit to this interesting museum. There's English-speaking staff who'll explain everything :-).
