Prag ist nicht gerade berühmt für seine Durchhäuser - wenige wissen von ihrer Existenz. Sicherlich standen bei der Entstehung die Passagen in Mailand oder Paris Pate, und vielleicht gibt es andernorts prunkvollere, aufwändigere Schneisen durch das urbane Dickicht. Doch die steinernen Adern der Moldaustadt sind etwas Besonderes: Sie wirken bizarr in ihrer Antiquiertheit, mit dem nostalgischen Hauch vergangener Zeiten.

Der Ausgangspunkt für einen Spaziergang durch die Prager Mittelwelt liegt direkt am Wenzelsplatz: Es ist der Eingang zur Lucerna-Passage (Štepánská 61). Der erste Eisenbetonbau Prags wurde zwischen 1907 und 1921 von Vácslav Havel errichtet, dem Großvater des langjährigen Präsidenten. Der Palast beherbergt in verzweigten Flügeln Kinos, Geschäfte und Gaststätten; im Souterrain befindet sich zudem ein Ballsaal, in dem Karel Gott seine Weihnachtskonzerte gibt. Am besten lässt sich das Treiben in der Passage durch die großen Scheiben des Lucerna-Cafés beobachten (im Vorraum des Kinos im ersten Stock). Für Technikliebhaber sei auf einen der letzten Prager Paternoster hingewiesen, der sich gleich rechts am Eingang der Passage befindet.

Verlässt man die Lucerna an der Vodicková-Straße, führt gleich gegenüber der Eingang in die Svetozor-Passage (Vodicková 39). Das konstruktivistische Haus wurde 1928 erbaut und erfreut sich wegen der Eisdiele Svetozor großer Beliebtheit. In der Passage befindet sich auch ein Laden für Briefmarkensammler. Gleich um die Ecke liegt wie ein verborgenes Paradies der Franziskanergarten. In der 1950 angelegten Großstadtoase mit ihren statuengeschmückten Brunnen verbringen viele Prager ihre Mittagspause. Der Kiesweg führt am Fragment der gotischen Maria-Schnee-Kirche vorbei zum Jungmannovo námestí (Jungmann-Platz).

Die Kirche war im Jahr 1379 begonnen worden und sollte dreischiffig mehr als 100 m lang sein. Damit hätte das Gotteshaus den heutigen Jungmannovo námestí ganz eingenommen. An der Statue des slawischen Philologen Josef Jungmann (1773-1847) vorbei, der dem Jungmannovo námestí seinen Namen gab, geht es in die Adria-Passage (Jungmannova 35). Das spätkubistische Gebäude im Stil venezianischer Renaissancepaläste wurde 1924 als Sitz einer Versicherungsgesellschaft errichtet und enthält neben Geschäften ein exzellentes Restaurant mit Terrasse und ein Theater. Früher war hier das berühmte Schwarzlichtheater Laterna magika ansässig. Die Fassade schmücken Skulpturen und eine Sonnenuhr der renommierten Bildhauer Otto Gutfreund und Bohumil Kafka. Besonders auffällig ist die Seefahrtsstatue von Jan Štursa (1924). Das Adria-Palais erinnere an eine üppige Hochzeitstorte und bildet einen scharfen Kontrast zum funktionalistischen ARA-Haus gegenüber, schrieb ein Architekturführer einmal. Am Ausgang stößt man auf die Národní trída (Nationalstraße) und kehrt damit in den Trubel der Großstadt zurück. Doch nur 100 m die Straße hinunter, auf der Gegenseite, führt hinter dem Haus Nr. 37 ein schmaler Gang über den Platýz-Hof zum Uhelný trh (Kohlenmarkt). Das Platýz war in der Mitte des 13. Jhs. an der Stelle der Stadtmauer erbaut worden (Reste davon befinden sich im Keller) und diente nach einem Umbau Mitte des 19. Jhs. als eins der ersten Mietshäuser Prags. 1846 trat hier auch Franz Liszt auf (Gedenktafel am Tor zum Uhelný trh). In der benachbarten Kirche St. Martin an der Mauer reichten Hussiten 1419 erstmals den Kelch mit Messwein auch den Gläubigen und stellten sich damit gegen die Kirche. Der Uhelný trh wurde erst im Winter 1998/99 nach umfangreichen Restaurierungen in seiner jetzigen Form eröffnet. Im Haus Nr. 420 wohnte 1787 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - eine Gedenktafel erinnert daran. Aus seinem Fenster konnte der Meister die Köhlerei sehen, die bis 1807 in der Mitte des Platzes stand. Heute steht dort der Wimmer'sche Brunnen. Der Bildhauer Frantisek Xaver Lederer schuf das klassizistische Werk mit Allegorien des Wein- und Gartenbaus 1797 für den Mäzen Jakob Wimmer, der es der Stadt schenkte. Nach der Umgestaltung der Národní trída stellte man den Brunnen 1951 hier auf.

Am Uhelný trh endet dieser Spaziergang. Zum Entspannen bietet sich die nahe Bierkneipe U dvou kocek (Zu den Zwei Kätzchen) unter den Arkaden an. Und wer nun noch nicht genug hat von den Durchhäusern, der sei verwiesen auf die Jalta-Passage und das Koruna-Palais an Kopf und Fuß des Wenzelsplatzes.
