<triplocations name="Wat Arun" description="As Ayutthaya lay in ashes after conquest by the Burmese, General Taksin undertook to march the remaining survivors “until the sun rises again” and vowed to erect a temple at whatever spot they had reached. The place at which they arrived is now the site of Wat Arun, the temple of the dawn. Initially it was to serve as a palace chapel for Taksin’s new abode. The 86m/282ft central prang with four smaller prangs around it has now become Bangkok’s leading landmark, even though it actually stands across the river in Thonburi. The outside of the brick building is decorated with thousands of porcelain details that were donated by the people of Bangkok and added at a later date. The construction method of Wat Arun is fascinating. Since the ground beneath it was so swampy, thousands of bamboo stems were laid across one another and the spaces created by this lattice were filled with clay. In this way, a foundation capable of bearing a sufficient weight was created. It is well worth climbing to the top of the prang to experience the fabulous view. Jade Buddha(also known as the Emerald Buddha) in Wat Phra Kaeo. Each of the buildings within the compound, which covers an area of 218,400 sq m/54 acres, expresses one of the stylistic and cultural epochs of Thai history and, in particular, the character of the reigning kings. The buildings in the whole of the consecrated area have retained the style of the age when they were built in spite of repeated restoration. Each of the many renovations has concentrated on preserving the pure essence of the originals, and particularly of the huge murals that have always suffered from severe atmospheric pollution in the ever-expanding city of Bangkok.
Wat Phra Kaeo(Temple of the Emerald Buddha). The guardian figures were sponsored by Chinese merchants and seem a little out of place in a setting that is otherwise dominated by typically Thai architecture. At the entrance gate there are murals depicting the opening of the Ramakien epicas well as marble tablets with inscriptions that were put in place by King Chulalongkorn(Rama V).
