New Year's in Melbourne

New Year's in Melbourne

Melbourne puts on a rather spectacular show on New Year's Eve. It almost seems the whole extent of the Yarra river in the Southbank neighborhood is one big party. Like Sydney, there is a special program for families and those who want to avoid the crowds during the New Year Eve party at 9:15. The Melbourne New Year's fireworks display at midnight is spectacular, so make sure you have a nice vantage point for it.

Alexandra Gardens are the center of all the family fun, while the New Quay has fire-jugglers and walkers on stilts. Federation Square also hosts a number of live music acts. Otherwise head to St. Kilda beach to hang out near the water and enjoy the fireworks.

Travelodge and Darling towers offer great accommodation at reasonable prices.

Celebrate New Year's Eve in style by dining at Silks restaurants, where Chef Pin Yan Yeung prepares an excellent Cantonese fine dining venue. If you would rather have Australian fare, hit the Deck, which has local fare served stylishly.

Melbourne New Year's is alcohol free (you are not allowed to bring alcohol to any of the venues). Nevertheless, you can party it up on New Year's Eve at the Blue Diamond bar or Stork, where you can really gel with the local crowd.

Cure your hangover on New Year's Day by heading to Pellegrini's Espresson bar for brunch and excellent coffee.
