For Budget-Minded Travelers

A Berlin budget trip can be extremely rewarding since the city is known to cater to backpackers. Begin your budget vacation in Berlin by arriving by train at the Hauptbahnhof (trains from the airport also take you here), an architectural marvel of glass and steel which re-opened its doors after renovation in 2006. You can walk down to the Reichstag building after crossing the Spree river. Brave the queue at the Reichstag to reach the glass dome at the top of the building, which offers impressive views of the city.

Circle the Reichstag to get to the Branderburg Gate, a Berlin landmark of huge historic significance. Walk down Ebertstrasse to reach the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which commemorates the Holocaust. Further down the same street you will come to Potsdamer Platz, the renewed plaza which stands as a symbol of the re-unified Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The plaza used to be a dreaded no-man's land between East and West Berlin, but now has a number of impressive buildings that house big businesses and public institutions.

Another symbol of divided Berlin is Checkpoint Charlie, a short walk east. On the way pass the 'Topography of Terror' museum, which highlights the atrocities of the Gestapo and SS. You are now on Friedrichstrasse, a shopping street that joins onto the leafy Unter den Linden boulevard. Along the way take in the Französische Kirche, a beautiful church plaza which is home to a great Christmas Market in December. Walk up Unter den Linden to the famous 'Alex' TV tower on Alexanderplatz, another emblemic symbol of Berlin.

Circus Hostel is one of the best low-budget options for comfortable accommodation. Sankt Oberholz across the street offers excellent lunch at very reasonable prices as well as free wireless internet.

Treat yourself to the fabulous food and excellent atmosphere of Tuk Tuk, a great Indonesian eatery in the Schöneberg neighborhood, also great for those on a low-budget Berlin vacation.

For nightlife, there are few places better than Kreuzberg, which has a number of hip bars, clubs and trendy cafés. If you plan to party big, head to Berghain, hailed as a cathedral to techno music.

On another day visit the trendy Prenzlauerberg district - it's filled with cheap eateries, bars, and cafés. The Hackescher Markt is also popular amongst residents for its eating options.

Round off your budget trip to Berlin with a visit to the flea market that takes place in the Mauerpark every Sunday. This is also an excellent place to hunt for bargains, grab great international food, or take part in an open-air karaoke with hundreds of people joining in.
