<triplocations name="The Basilica Cathedral of Lima" description="The cathedral stands on the site of two previous buildings. The first, finished in 1555, was partly paid for by Francisca Pizarro on the condition that her father, the Conquistador, was buried there. A larger church, however, was soon required to complement the city’s status as an archbishopric. In 1625, the three naves of the main building were completed while work continued on the towers and main door. The new building was reduced to rubble in the earthquake of 1746 and the existing church, completed in 1755, is a reconstruction on the lines of the original.

The interior is immediately impressive, with its massive columns and high nave. Also of note are the splendidly carved stalls (mid-17th century), the silver-covered altars surrounded by fine woodwork, mosaic-covered walls bearing the coats of arms of Lima and Pizarro and an allegory of Pizarro’s commanders, the ‘Thirteen men of Isla del Gallo’. The assumed remains of Francisco Pizarro lie in a small chapel, the first on the right of the entrance, in a glass coffin, though later research indicates that they reside in the crypt. There is a Museo de Arte Religioso in the cathedral, with free guided tours (English available, give tip), ask to see the picture restoration room." favorite="" full_name="The Basilica Cathedral of Lima, Lima, Peru" googled_path="Peru/Lima/The-Basilica-Cathedral-of-Lima" hidden="0" href="http://www.tripwolf.com/en/guide/show/13835/Peru/Lima/The-Basilica-Cathedral-of-Lima" id="13835" inherited="0" is_poi="1" item_name="The Basilica Cathedral of Lima, Lima, Peru" language="ENG" latitude="-12.0467281" longitude="-77.0297293" ltp_level="0" parents_name="Lima, Peru" rating="0" recommended="" status_description="4" status_name="1" status_tags="0" status_teaser="2" teaser="Unique for its architecture, this 16th century cathedral is the main religious symbol of the city." teaser_or_description="<b>Unique for its architecture, this 16th century cathedral is the main religious symbol of the city.</b> The cathedral stands on the site of two previous buildings. <triplocations name="Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera" description="The Larco Museum is located in Pueblo Libre in Lima; it is located in an 18th century mansion built over a 7th century pyramid. The museum was created in 1926 by Rafael Larco Hoyle, a famous Peruvian archaeologist who discovered many Northern pre-Columbian civilizations such as Cupisnique, and who helped redefining the Mochica culture. The permanent exhibition is divided into the different main pre-Columbian areas (North, Centre, South and the Highlands) and offers a complete and very rich collection of ceramic work, showing all the different techniques they used. There is also an important collection of jewelry made of various typical semi-precious stones and a textile gallery. Although this museum is famous for its Mochica area, it also offers a really interesting and complete collection of Chimú, Lambayeque, Virú, Nazca, and Inca art including crowns, earrings, nose ornaments, garments, masks and vases, finely wrought in gold and decorated with semi-precious stones. The new organization of the museum also offers a thematic approach of the pre-Columbian civilizations, such as the sacrificial area which shows various ornaments and instruments used for sacrifice. The erotic Gallery has become one of the most appreciated areas of the museum; it provides curious pots and sculptures that are more than realistic (with moralistic or just humoristic purposes). This shows us the different sexual behaviors those civilizations had. The whole museum can easily be visited in an hour and a half but if you still have some time and you are not in a hurry, I would advise you to sit at the café Del Museo where you can have a drink or order typical Peruvian food or to have a walk in the peaceful garden. The menu was made by Gaston Acurio, a very famous Peruvian chef and it is really affordable. The Larco Museum is truly a man wonder for those who are keen to learn more about pre-Columbian art or those who just want to know a bit about the Peruvian cultures. The baroque church, which was finished in 1674, was one of the few edifices to withstand the 1746 earthquake. The nave and aisles are lavishly decorated in the Moorish, or Mudéjar, style. The choir, which dates from 1673, is notable for its beautifully carved seats in Nicaraguan hardwood and its Mudéjar ceiling. There is a valuable collection of paintings by the Spanish artist, Francisco de Zubarán (1598-1664), which depict the apostles and various saints.

The monastery is famous for the Sevillian tilework and panelled ceiling in the cloisters (1620). The 17th-century retablos in the main cloister are carved from cedar and represent scenes from the life of San Francisco, as do the paintings. A broad staircase leading down to a smaller cloister is covered by a remarkable carved wooden dome (nicknamed la media naranja – the half orange) dating from 1625. Next to this smaller cloister is the Capilla de la Soledad where a café is open to the public. The library contains 25,000 volumes. In the refectory, see the painting of the Last Supper in which Christ and his disciples are seated at a round table. Look for the devil at Judas Iscariot’s shoulder. The catacombs under the church and part of the monastery are well worth seeing. This is where an estimated 25,000 Limeños were buried before the main cemetery was opened in 1808.

Opposite the San Francisco church is a historic mansion worth visiting, the late 16th-century Casa de Jarava or Pilatos (Jr Ancash 390) . Two blocks beyond is Casa de las Trece Monedas (Jr Ancash 536) built in 1787 by counts from Genoa.
