<triplocations name="Alamo Square" description="If you only have time to enjoy one view, make sure it’s this one – captured on thousands of postcards: from Hayes Street you look North-East towards Steiner Street where the famous and stunning Victorian houses – the painted ladies – are lined up in a “postcard row”, neatly framing the city’s financial district in the background. Actually, the label “Victorian” is not entirely correct. The only thing the architectural style of these houses has in common with the prime of the English bourgeoisie, the strict moral principles and romantic honoring of the British crown, is the period they were built in: the second half of the 19th century. Other than that Queen Victoria influenced the style of the “gingerbread” houses much less than the actual carpenters who built them - many of them seamen who got inspired and brought back ideas from their travels. And their designs were far from guided by moral principles: the spade shaped woodworks in the balustrades and gables quite simply illustrated the ace of spades symbol, meaning that in such a building gambling was practiced. Also the ornamental bottles and hearts had advertising character – for taverns and brothels.
In the 70ies the “Victorians” had their Renaissance and - with their large bay windows and steep stairways – they are until today San Francisco’s jewels and homes of the wealthy. Whoever owns one guards it jealously!
If you can’t get enough of the painted ladies, check out more colorful Victorians at Lafayette Square, on California Street, on Liberty Street or between Franklin Street and the Presidio.

If you go to Alamo Square, please take a look at the quirky "shoe garden" around the gardener's shack. (at the very center of the park) If you have a quirky old shoe, maybe you can plan ahead to bring it, and add it to the garden. . To make a shoe plant, take one interesting shoe that is worn out, add some earth, and a plant, and some time.

I lived in and around this neighborhood for a very long time, and I miss San Francisco greatly. The shoe garden was one of the neat hidden reasons why I love San Francisco. <triplocations name="Fisherman's Wharf" description="Over the last few decades San Francisco's importance as a fishing harbor declined significantly. Although there are still some fishing boats bringing their catch back to this Northern port of the city, the main thing that drives Fisherman's Wharf is tourism. With plenty of amusement installations, hotels, shops and restaurants you can easily spent a whole day or more exploring.
One of the four main areas of Fisherman's Wharf is Ghirardelli Square, named after the former chocolate factory of the Italian business man Domingo Ghirardelli which recently was turned into a shopping center.
About 80 shops and restaurant gathered in the pretty court yard. Next door you'll find Cannery, the red brick building of the former Del Monte tinning factory. This building also has been turned into a shopping gallery with some fancy but also some very touristy shops, bars and restaurants. In 2003 the chic Argonaut Hotel also opened in this complex.
Pier 39 decorated with big colorful flower pots has to offer even more shops than Ghirardelli Square and Cannery together. Since 1990 there has also been a new attraction: a herd of hundreds of male sea lions is chilling out in the sun at the pier. Visitors are spoiling them with plenty of fish so it seems they decided to make this their new local hangout on their return from the Channel Island after their mating season.
A modern addition to Fisherman's Wharf is the Anchorage Shopping Center, where - despite the impressive anchor sculpture - you won't find any ships docking but fancy boutiques and the Howard Johnson's Motel instead. In the inner court yard you'll come across jugglers, musicians and magicians entertaining tourists with their shows. At the end of Pier 45 you can inspect the wold war two submarine "USS Pampanito" and at Pier 43 the "Balclutha", a steel cargo ship from Cape Horn Fleet. Hyde Street Pier is home to six more museum ships open to the public. Newer and smaller boats can be chartered for fishing trips. Since this is the case this 63m high tower based on top of the 74m high Telegraph Hill, rising straight up from San Francisco's piers, provides very beautiful panoramic views. Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a rich and eccentric lady had a fondness for fire fighters. As a child she was the mascot of the number 5 fire truck crew and until the end of her days she was an honorary member of the fire brigade wearing their badge. The only difference: Lady Coit's badge was decorated with diamonds. When she died in 1929 she left behind $100,000 for the construction of this tower in honor of all fire fighters.
Some of the wall paintings which can be seen inside the tower are in surprising contrast to Lillie Hitchcock Coit's wealth. They were painted in 1933/34 in a period of 6 months and illustrate the poverty and radical political position of the left-wingers of those days, depicting purest proletarian realism, created by around 30 painters who were strongly influenced by Mexican artist Diego Rivera.
