But most out-of-towners have no idea what that means, so I usually end up drawing a little map with some highlights on it. It ends up looking a lot like this one.

DUMBO is absolutely beautiful for just walking around, which is why I haven't listed too many galleries or bars - meandering around, you're inevitably going to find them all. You could also do this itinerary in reverse, starting out in DUMBO and then walking across the bridge at sunset for dinner in Chinatown. But to do DUMBO any justice, you really should go back for seconds and thirds." marked_deleted="0" modified="2009-10-22 18:59:25.022752" modifier_id="72" privacy="1" static_map_url="http://maps.google.com/staticmap?hl=en&maptype=roadmap&format=png&markers=40.712435,-74.007887,reda%7C40.706210,-73.997140,redb%7C40.704343,-73.990130,redc%7C40.703180,-73.987234,redd%7C40.702635,-73.987625,rede%7C40.703188,-73.987545,redf%7C40.703245,-73.991391,redg%7C40.703432,-73.992534,redh%7C40.703042,-73.995130,redi%7C40.701561,-73.997340,redj&key=ABCDABCD&size=123123123x123123123&path=rgb:0x0000ff,weight:5|40.712435,-74.007887|40.706210,-73.997140|40.704343,-73.990130|40.703180,-73.987234|40.702635,-73.987625|40.703188,-73.987545|40.703245,-73.991391|40.703432,-73.992534|40.703042,-73.995130|40.701561,-73.997340" status="0" sum_locations="10" sum_votes="5" title="You've walked across the Brooklyn Bridge . . . now what??" triplocation_id="5026" />

The plans for the first steel hanging bridge in the world, which rests on two mighty piers about 40m/130ft over the water, were drawn up by the engineer Johann August Röbling, originally from Mühlhausen in Thuringia Röbling, Johann August. He died two years later from injuries incurred during a work accident. His son Washington Roebling continued the work. In 1872 he suffered from the bends after he left a caisson too soon, before the pressure had been equalized. His wife Emily took over the construction project; the partially lamed Roebling directed the work from home and watched through his telescope from the window of his house in Brooklyn. The bridge was inaugurated in May 1883 after 16 years of construction. It is 1,052m/1,150yd long without the ramps (the entire span is 2–3km/1.2–1.8mi). The walkway, reserved for pedestrians, runs 5.5m/18ft above the six-lane street, from which walkers, joggers and cyclists have an impressive view of Manhattan with its skyscrapers and of the South Street Seaport as well as the Upper Bay with the Statue of Liberty in the distance, especially in the evening; at night the bridge is seen as an impressive string of lights between Brooklyn and Manhattan." favorite="" full_name="Brooklyn Bridge, New York City (NYC), New York State (NY), United States of America" googled_path="United-States-of-America/New-York-State-NY/New-York-City-NYC/Brooklyn-Bridge" hidden="0" href="http://www.tripwolf.com/en/guide/show/297915/United-States-of-America/New-York-State-NY/New-York-City-NYC/Brooklyn-Bridge" id="297915" inherited="0" is_poi="1" item_name="Brooklyn Bridge, New York City (NYC), New York State (NY), United States of America" language="ENG" latitude="40.70621" longitude="-73.99714" ltp_level="0" parents_name="New York City, New York, USA" rating="4" recommended="" status_description="4" status_name="1" status_tags="0" status_teaser="2" teaser="Walk towards manhattan!
