The architect Albert Schickedanz and the sculptor György Zala were entrusted with the design of the square. Schickedanz also designed the two monumental buildings flanking the square: the Museum of Fine Artsand the Palace of Art. Heroes’ Square was only completed in 1927, three decades after building began.Over the past hundred years, Hösök tere has again and again been a stage for decisive moments in Hungarian history. During the 1918–19 revolution, the sculpture of Emperor Franz Joseph was smashed as a symbol for the break with the Habsburgs, the entire square draped with red cloth, and the statues of Árpád replaced with a sculpture of Marx and a monument to workers and farmers. Hösök tere was also repeatedly the stage for political demonstrations after 1945, as well as in 1989, when Imre Nagy and his companions were posthumously rehabilitated in a solemn ceremony of state. It was constructed in the Moorish-Byzantine style of romantic historicism to plans by the architect Ludwig Förster. Two polygonal towers over 30m/100ft high dominate the façade. The interior of the synagogue, which can hold around 3000 people, was designed by Hungarian artists and craftsmen, including the famous architect Frigyes Feszl. Delicate columns of cast iron form the filigree supporting structure for the broad triple-aisled room. The two side aisles have galleries for the women. The magnificent organ has been played in the past by such renowned musicians as Franz (Ferenc) Liszt and Camille Saint-Saëns. The rabbis who have served here include such outstanding characters as Majer Kayserling, Samuel Kohn and Simon Hevesi. A cemeteryfor the martyrs of the Budapest Ghetto can be found in the garden of the Great Synagogue. Several thousand Jewish victims of fascism are buried here in two mass graves.
In front of the martyrs’ cemetery stands the smaller Heroes’ Synagogue, also built in oriental style, which was erected in the 1930s for the Hungarian Jewish soldiers who fell in the First World War.

<triplocations name="Buda Castle Palace (Budavári palota)" description="The construction of the first castle was closely linked to the Mongol invasions of the years 1241–42. King Béla IV had numerous fortifications built in the country in the 13th century as protection from further attacks and to control the Danube, and fortified Buda with a royal castle of which, however, nothing remains. A small palace was built in its place under King Charles Robert of Anjou in the 14th century, on top of which King Louis of Anjou built himself a magnificent palace after the royal residence had moved from Visegrád to Buda. A few fragments, for example the so-called Stephen’s Tower, a Gothic residential tower, and the lower section of a palace chapel have survived from this period. His successor Sigismund had the residence massively extended to the north with the New Palace, which does not survive. The living quarters were equipped with heating systems and the fortifications were improved all around. Under King Matthias Corvinus, who is remembered as a promoter of the Renaissance and humanism, the royal palace was extended magnificently in the style of the early Renaissance. The Turks did not destroy the royal palace during their 150-year rule, but nor did they do anything towards its maintenance. Sigismund’s so-called New Palace served as an armoury and was totally destroyed by an explosion in 1578, while the other royal buildings fell victim to the sieges and battles of 1686. After victory over the Turks by the Holy Alliance, the damaged fortifications were initially restored and renewed, but it was only in the 18th century that the Habsburg kings undertook the building of a new palace. A new residence was built north of Stephen’s Tower under Charles III in 1719, to plans by the Italian architect Fortunato Prati. Maria Theresa finally ordered the further extension of the rather humble palace, which was completed in 1770. From then on, the palace was a symmetrical three-part building, comprised of a south wing (the original palace and today’s E wing), a higher central wing (today’s D wing), and a northern wing (today’s C wing). The planning was placed in the hands of Jean Nicolas Jadot, who was active as an architect at the court of Vienna. The Baroque architect Franz Anton Hillebrandt supervised the construction. For almost a hundred years no further building works were undertaken on the palace, in which the representatives of the Habsburg emperors (palatines) had lived since 1790. Only in 1867, after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, were renewed plans made for an extension, which was this time entrusted to the Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl" favorite="" full_name="Buda Castle Palace (Budavári palota), Budapest, Hungary" googled_path="Hungary/Budapest/Buda-Castle-Palace-Budavari-palota" hidden="0" href="http://www.tripwolf.com/en/guide/show/299617/Hungary/Budapest/Buda-Castle-Palace-Budavari-palota" id="299617" inherited="0" is_poi="1" item_name="Buda Castle Palace (Budavári palota), Budapest, Hungary" language="ENG" latitude="47.49784" longitude="19.03816" ltp_level="0" parents_name="Budapest, Hungary" rating="4" recommended="" status_description="4" status_name="1" status_tags="0" status_teaser="2" teaser="The Hungarian kings built their residence high above the Danube. <triplocations name="Matthias Church (Mátyás templom)" description="Buda’s Church of the Blessed Virgin is one of the Hungarian capital’s top sights and has its origin in a sacred building which was erected between 1255 and 1269, during the time of King Béla IV. It has been remodelled numerous times since then. In the second half of the 14th century, the basilica was converted into a hall church, the aisles extended to the east and given polygonal endings, and a magnificent Gothic portal with a representation of the Virgin Mary’s death in the tympanum erected on the southern façade. Charles Robert of Anjou was crowned King of Hungary in the Church of the Blessed Virgin in 1309. Side chapels, an oratory for the royal family and a new south tower were added under King Matthias, after whom the church is now named. The church fell victim to a fire in 1526 and fifteen years later, when the Turks occupied the city, it was turned into a mosque. After the expulsion of the Turks by the Austrians, the Jesuits took over the Matthias Church and renovated it in the Baroque style. Frigyes Schulekgave the Matthias Church its present form between 1874 and 1896. The Baroque architecture fell victim to his puritanical intention to restore the building’s Gothic appearance. The church suffered heavy damage at the end of the Second World War and was painstakingly rebuilt during the post-war years.
The most important survival from the Gothic church is the portal of the Virgin Mary on the south side, today protected by Schulek’s porch. The wonderful relief in the gable illustrating the Virgin Mary’s death dates from the 14th century. The entrance is flanked on either side by statues of the canonized kings Stephen and Ladislaus." favorite="" full_name="Matthias Church (Mátyás templom), Budapest, Hungary" googled_path="Hungary/Budapest/Matthias-Church-Matyas-templom" hidden="0" href="http://www.tripwolf.com/en/guide/show/299632/Hungary/Budapest/Matthias-Church-Matyas-templom" id="299632" inherited="0" is_poi="1" item_name="Matthias Church (Mátyás templom), Budapest, Hungary" language="ENG" latitude="47.5311021241856" longitude="19.0246423317126" ltp_level="0" parents_name="Budapest, Hungary" rating="0" recommended="" status_description="4" status_name="1" status_tags="0" status_teaser="2" teaser="	A beautiful church associated with King Matthias." teaser_or_description="<b>	A beautiful church associated with King Matthias.</b> Buda’s Church of the Blessed Virgin is one of the Hungarian capital’s top sights and has its origin in a sacred building which was erected between 125..." teaser_or_description_short="<b>	A beautiful church associated with King Matthias.</b> Buda’s Church of the Blessed Virgin is one of the Hungarian capital’s ..." type="13" type_id="13" type_name="sight" votes="1" zoom="16">
