It's less expensive than Costa RIca but no less charming, and the 3 destinations here are classics.

Though you'll fly into Guatemala City, you'll want to skip it entirely. Hop on a quick flight to Tikal and explore the ruins there for a day or two. Fly back and take a bus up to Antigua, a gorgeous Spanish colonial town that is perfect for slow meandering. While here, you can also take a morning to visit Volcan Pacaya, an active volcano nearby from which you can see real lava. Once you've soaked up the romanticism of Antigua, head to Lake Atitlan and spend the rest of your time relaxing and boating to various lakeside villages. This is the place to really sit back and do nothing, so the more time you can spend here, the better." marked_deleted="0" modified="2009-10-23 15:26:40.62208" modifier_id="72" privacy="1" static_map_url="http://maps.google.com/staticmap?hl=en&maptype=roadmap&format=png&markers=17.217140,-89.623253,reda%7C14.553346,-90.734367,redb%7C14.464602,-90.622787,redc%7C14.724749,-91.263084,redd%7C14.706154,-91.194420,rede%7C14.694033,-91.269693,redf&key=ABCDABCD&size=123123123x123123123&path=rgb:0x0000ff,weight:5|17.217140,-89.623253|14.553346,-90.734367|14.464602,-90.622787|14.724749,-91.263084|14.706154,-91.194420|14.694033,-91.269693" status="0" sum_locations="6" sum_votes="2" title="The One-Week Vacation: Guatemala's Highlights" triplocation_id="523" />
