The conquistador Francisco de Montejo the Younger (El Mozo) established the city on 6 January 1542. The Maya fought fiercely but the Spaniard took most of Yucatán in the four years that followed. The city of Mérida was built where the Maya city Tihó once stood. Stones were taken from the Maya temples and used as building material. A pivotal role was played by Diego de Landa, the second bishop of Mérida, who was determined to completely destroy the ancient Indian culture with all possible means. In his ignorance, he had a large number of irreplaceable hieroglyphic Maya scripts burnt. The bishop was also the author of the famous book Relación de las Cosas de Yucatán, in which he documents the conquest of Yucatán and its civilization from the Spanish viewpoint. Due to the geographical location, Mérida and Yucatán hardly played any role in the Mexican War of Independence against Spain. On the contrary, there were several attempts to separate Yucatán from Mexico. A bloody civil war, the Caste War of Yucatán – a Maya insurgency against Mexican domination – raged in Yucatán throughout the second half of the 19th century. Peace was only to return in the first years of the 20th century. The site covers seven terraces on a hill, and two ball courts have been found at its base. Among the excavated finds are many stelae with inscribed dates between 495 and 909, round calendar stones and sculptures of humans without heads. Of special interest is the discovery of an underground chamber with cantilever arch and wooden lintel, as well as a tomb with sarcophagus, large stone masks and stucco statues. Finds from the early 1990s include the Palace of the Underworld (Palacio del Inframundo). The palace with a base of 4 x 12m/13 x 39ft was built from stones that had not been used in the region prior to this building. Maya motifs, Toltec elements and the large stucco mural of the Fourth Sun suggest that Toniná continued to exist after the Maya classical period, submitting to Toltec influence. The beautiful Frieze of the "Dream Lords" was discovered in September 1997. The unique mural depicts, in red, four lords of the underworld who symbolize war, agriculture, trade and tribute.
