<triplocations name="Saint Tropez" description="André Raggio comes from a long line of fishermen, seven generations in all. After he retired ten years ago, his son took over the family business, but he still comes to lend him a hand. There are only five fishing boat owners left in the port of Saint Tropez. Fifty years ago, there were sixty of them. "At the time, we caught spiny lobster, a large amount of sardines, and sea bream. With the expansion of pleasure boating, we had to give up using trawl nets. When we placed the nets in the morning, we never knew what state they would be at the end of the day. So we now keep to rock fish, red mullet, black and red scorpion fish and the like, what we call "rock soup". Now and then we catch a bit of John Dory or the odd lobster." The fishermen of Saint Tropez are not about to give up… Saint Tropez, once a fishing and a commercial port, has gradually become an internationally known marina. "We have the largest concentration of pleasure boats in the Mediterranean, between 5 and 6,000" André Raggio comments, somewhat wearily. "Motorboats, yachts, outboards, tour boats and even cruisers: you see them going out to the beach every morning, and coming in every evening. The sea is agitated, day and night, in a very bad way indeed!" Although the traditional fishing boats with their pointed prows, like André's, now seem quaint, they are manned by real fishermen. "It's a hard job. If you want to make a living, you have to work twelve to thirteen hours a day, weekends included. No holidays, no minimum wage. But it's still a great occupation. Even if cohabitation with the leisure sailors is sometimes difficult, the fishermen of Saint Tropez are not about to give up!"" favorite="" full_name="Saint Tropez, France" googled_path="France/Saint-Tropez" hidden="0" href="http://www.tripwolf.com/en/guide/show/214196/France/Saint-Tropez" id="214196" inherited="0" is_poi="0" item_name="Saint Tropez, France" language="ENG" latitude="43.270183" longitude="6.640985" ltp_level="0" parents_name="France" rating="0" recommended="" status_description="4" status_name="1" status_tags="0" status_teaser="2" teaser="The harbour is well known for the beautiful sailing ships on its quays. <triplocations name="Nature Trails" description="The meeting point is at the car park beside the Escalet beach in Ramatuelle. The brochure on the guided nature walks sets the tone: "From the rocks to the isthmus on Cap Taillat. One of the most beautiful spots in the Var, with its granite coast, small fine-sanded beaches and a sea of many blues, featuring a number of remarkably rare and unusually adaptable plants…" About ten of us in all, some on their own, a number of couples with children, congregate around Denis Huin, a natural scientist. First stop after about a hundred yards, for a botany lesson at the edge of the beach. Our guide itemises the salt-loving species that grow in the sandy areas, which include rock samphire, Anthyllis barba-jovis, Thymelaea hirsuta, sea spinach, sea daffodils, wartweed and African tamarisk. Barbary and Hottentot figs These native plants have been joined by some more or less invasive exotic species, such as the Hottentot fig and the Barbary fig, perfectly adapted to extreme conditions: dry soil, heat and continual salt spray. The path leads us to a hill partially ravaged by an accidental fire during the summer of 2007. An opportunity for a safety lesson: in this case, it was a brush-clearing operation, prohibited in summer, which sparked off the fire. On the same hill, with an impressive view onto the emerald seabed below, Denis Huin launches into an explanation of marine flora, and tells us that posidonia is not in fact seaweed, but a flowering plant, very protected around the shores of the Mediterranean. The pink granite of Escalet We wend our way onto the isthmus, not quite as far the point. On this thin strip of sand, our guide's explanations are sometimes blown away by the sea wind, as he responds to a question on the migrant birds that gather on the three points, before embarking upon their Mediterranean crossing. Time to get back already. After an outing of three hours and three kilometres, we return to the Escalet beach, with its bathers and pink granite rocks lit by the setting sun, our heads filled with beautiful images, fascinating information, and lots of questions still to be answered. Give this type of walk a try, just once, you won't regret it! The guided nature walks were initiated by the Var local council. The brochure is free of charge and includes over a hundred routes, half of which are on the Maures and along the coast. It is available in all tourist offices, which have made a number of contributions themselves, and are familiar with the guides and suggested walks. These outings are not only designed for summer visitors, they are organised all year round. Themes and routes obviously depend on the season, the temperature and limitations on entering the woods at certain times of the year." favorite="" full_name="Nature Trails, Saint Tropez, France" googled_path="France/Saint-Tropez/Nature-Trails" hidden="0" href="http://www.tripwolf.com/en/guide/show/604494/France/Saint-Tropez/Nature-Trails" id="604494" inherited="0" is_poi="1" item_name="Nature Trails, Saint Tropez, France" language="ENG" latitude="43.2157" longitude="6.61308" ltp_level="0" parents_name="Saint Tropez, France" rating="0" recommended="" status_description="4" status_name="1" status_tags="0" status_teaser="2" teaser="Geology and botany, heritage and history, landscape reading and coastal paths...
