tripwolf enhances iPhone app with Augmented Reality

Vienna, May 7, 2010. The social travel guide tripwolf adds Augmented Reality to its popular iPhone travel app. By turning the iphone horizontally the camera becomes activated and nearby travel-related information such as sights, restaurants or hotels are displayed on the viewer. This makes the tripwolf app the perfect tool to orient yourself in a foreign environment. The new enhancement was developed in cooperation with the research institution Salzburg Research in Austria.

Augmented Reality connects the real world with the digital world. Travelers are now able to simply point their 3GS iPhone at any Point of Interest in a foreign city and retrieve all available information the online travel guide has to offer, without having to rely on a book or enter specific data. The tripwolf application is also available in offline mode, this way expensive roaming costs are avoided. The newly integrated Augmented Reality Viewer can also be used offline so you do not need to load online maps to navigate.

tripwolf currently has over 500.000 accessible Points of Interests available. “Augmented Reality is the perfect enhancement to our popular tripwolf iPhone App. I can orientate myself by using Augmented Reality anywhere on Earth. For example, I can use the tripwolf guide to find top restaurants in my vicinity and use the AR Viewer to navigate there. And the best thing about it is that it all works while I am offline,” says Alexander Trieb, tripwolf COO.
The iPhone Application with integrated Augmented Reality was developed in cooperation with the research institute „Salzburg Research,“ a research society of the region of Salzburg, which mainly does research in the fields of mobile and web-based information systems and eTourism.

[...] Well, we’re not quite there yet, but we do have iPhone apps coming out with “augmented reality“, like Poynt (reviewed by our own Larry Greenwald).  Another new app in this category is by tripwolf (“hungry for travel”), who has added augmented reality to their existing travel app.  Available for free on iTunes, if you want to take the next step towards wikitravel-in-your-head-on-a-chip, maybe you should check it out.
