China hosts the Olympic Games
It’s hard to see China’s human rights record in line with the Olympic spirit. But despite many serious protests against China’s hosting the 2008 Olympic games, they will go on as planned in Beijing. However, these games will be memorable for a lot more than just the controversies surrounding them. This year over 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in 302 contests – the largest number ever reported.

For visitors, there is plenty to explore: The famed Forbidden City still lies in the heart of Beijing, and The Great Wall is only a small trek away. Numerous UNESCO Heritage Sites can be seen in this city, including Tao temples, historical gardens and mosques. Even if you spent a lifetime trying to get to know Chinese people, culture, history and cuisine, it’s doubtful you could fit it all in.

Siena and Il Palio
Siena, an Italian town deeply rooted in history and located in the heart of Tuscany, is a great place to visit all year long. But during a few days in summer, it becomes the ultimate celebration weekend - when the heart-stopping Il Palio is staged.

For the 10 riders that participate, Il Palio is guaranteed to be two of the most intense minutes of their lives. Competing for a palio, literally a silk banner, riders put their lives on the line. The race is only three laps around Siena’s Central Piazza, yet for this thunderous mile, riders are bareback and one-handed - toting the flags of their respective city district. Whoever crosses the finish first is the winner, whether man or beast. There can only be one advise: save the date, August 16!
