Belfry of Ghent

The Belfort is a 311-foot-high bell tower in the center of town. It was built as an unambiguous symbol of the independence of the bourgeoisie against the aristocracy of Ghent. Construction began in 1313; starting in the mid-15th century, the Belfort also served as a watchtower with manned guards whose alarm bell warned the city's population of hazards such as fires. A metal dragon in the tower has kept an extra eye on the city since 1377.
