Thanks to immigration, legal or otherwise, into French Guiana from Brazil and Suriname by workers eager to earn their wages in Euros, the capital city of this Overseas French Region, Cayenne, is experiencing a boom. One might imagine Cayenne to be an ordered city akin to mainland France but transplanted to the tropics, where people sip chilled coconuts in hammocks and worry about very little. Alas, this is not an accurate image of Cayenne. Its population consists mainly of Creole French, Haitians, Brazilians, and Hmong refugees. Use the canals and the Avenue Général de Gaulle as reference points, and you'll never go wrong. Downtown there are some buildings of interest, such as the Hotel de Ville and the Préfecture; it makes for an interesting afternoon to wander this area of town between those buildings of historical interest and the ramshackle Franco-Caribbean structures. If you can make it in the morning to the market to see the produce, all brought in from the interior, then you can settle down with a freshly squeezed fruit juice in the middle of all the bustle. Avoid crossing the canal in front of the market into the dangerous Village Chinois (also called "Chicago"). French Guiana's main points of interest, such as the Îles du Salut and the Kourou Space Center lie within reasonable distance of Cayenne.
