Kumbo, also known as Banso, is the second-largest city in the Northwest Province of Cameroon. It lies about 2000m above sea level and has a population of 116,500 (2001 estimate). It is part of Bui Division. Located on the "ring road", one of the main routes of the province, it is known for horse racing (Tobin Stadium http://www.kumbourbancouncil.org/new_page_13.htm) and traditional medicine, and also for its palace (Nso Fon's Palace), a market and two hospitals (Shisong Hospital http://www.cabroad.org.uk/vacs/cameroon.htm & Banso Baptist Hospital http://www.cmawashington.org/index.cgi?BISKIT=1999498&CONTEXT=art&art=3668). Kumbo is the capital city of the Nso Kingdom of the Banso people. The lingua franca is Lamnso but English, French, Oku, Djottin, Fulfulde and Hausa are spoken.
The first German settlers were Missionaries of the Sacred Heart who arrived in 1912 and established their mission in 1913. (...) more....
