Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina (Diamond Plateau National Park) is one of the most fascinating national parks in Brazil. In the mountainous landscape you can find a large variety of ecosystems such as the cerrado (Brazilian savannah), the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Rainforest), rupestrian sites and even a desert, called caatinga. The ridges and their walls and hills , some of which soar for almost two thousand meters (1,700m), are home to jaguars, jaguatiricas (a small kind of jaguar), a small rodent called mocó , dears and a long-legged bird called seriema. The solid quartzite rocks form towers reaching over 1,500 meters and spreading through the cities of Palmeiras (Palm Trees Town), Lençóis (also the name of the local river) and Mucugê. The architecture of the cities around the national park is proof of the wealth from the diamond trading ages.
