Perth
Perth, the capital and major urban center of Western Australia, straddles the banks of the Swan River, approximately five hours west of Sydney by plane. A laid-back city with a population of around 1.5 million, Perth counts among its attractions the excellent Western Australian Museum, the Perth Mint (where you can see a gold ingot being poured), the botanical gardens in Kings Park, and an overabundance of clean uncrowded beaches stretching as far as the eye can see. A short train ride from the center of Perth brings you to Fremantle, a bubbly port city famous for its convict history, its duties as host of the America's Cup, and more recently its vibrant crafts and dining scene. A little more than ten miles off the coast is Rottnest Island, which is accessible from both Perth and Fremantle via ferry. Here, beaches, walks, cycling paths, and a rare marsupial known as the quokka await visitors. However, attractions in Western Australia are not limited to the immediate vicinity of Perth. To the south are the acclaimed vineyards of the Margaret River region. Traveling northwards brings you to the Pinnacles Desert and the spectacular Coral Coast, while for the truly adventurous, driving east opens up one of the wildest desert frontiers on Earth.
