Sipalay City

Sipalay City is situated in Negros Occidental about 180km south of the provincial capital Bacolod City as well as about 180 km north of Dumaguete City. Sipalay is surrounded by the municipalities of Cauayan in the North, Candoni in the East as well as Hinoba-an in the South. To its west you can find the Sulu Sea. Sipalay is politically subdivided in 17 barangays, 5 of these (Barangays 1 to 5) barangays comprise the urban core of the City. In 2010 67,403 people lived in Sipalay City. The name Sipalay comes from the native phrase “si paray” which means “there is rice”. Chinese traders who could not pronounce the “R” in the word “Paray” are believed to have disseminated the word Sipalay. It’s a remote sea side town which hasn’t seen much development in the last years. The town itself doesn’t have very much to offer and as a tourist you will probably prefer either going to Sugar Beach or to White Beach instead of staying in town. The diving which is probably the main attraction of Sipalay is one of the best on Negros. Furthermore it is a great place to just relax as you won’t find that many tourists there. Even if resorts are fully booked it won’t be crowded. If you get the chance, check out the Fiesta which is held every year in the last week of March where you can enjoy live bands on the beach of Sipalay!
