Ten kilometers west of Madaba is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites in Jordan: Mount Nebo. From here, after the Exodus, Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land. On a clear day you have a breathtaking view over the Dead Sea to Jericho, and on the horizon you can also make out Jerusalem on the plateau. The 840-meter-high mountain has been a pilgrimage site since the beginnings of Christianity. The Franciscans, who in 1933 bought part of the mountain, discovered the remains of a three-aisled basilica with remarkable floor mosaics from the 6th century: In addition to animal and plant motifs, a hunter and a lion and a shepherd and a flock can be seen. The basilica was demolished in 2008 in order to complete restoration. The mosaics can be seen in the Visitor Center. | (admission € 1).
