Johannesburg
A visit to Johannesburg is the chance to witness the extremes of the human psyche. "Jo'burg" was established in 1886 shortly after the discovery of gold. The city is littered with the remnants of abandoned gold mines whose history has been neatly packaged in the visitor-friendly Gold Reef City, which allows visitors to relive the mining experience amid an array of thrill rides. Still emerging from political and economic turmoil, the city center is currently undergoing a five-year overhaul, so apart from the performing arts center, it has relatively little to offer to visitors, and most of the city's highlights are actually located in the suburbs. While Johannesburg's wealth is concentrated in large shopping centers in Sandton, Soweto has been home to some of the world's greatest modern living heroes such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, who along with thousands of unsung courageous citizens fought against the injustices of apartheid. The Hector Pieterson Museum is a fine place to honor that history. "Jozi" also offers plenty of opportunities for nightlife, eating out, and taking advantage of opportunities to play golf, go rock climbing or swimming, and engage in a heated discussion about the beloved Springboks (popular rugby team) at a braai (roast).
