Murnau and its idyllic surroundings became famous thanks to Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter, who in 1911 founded the "Blue Rider" group of artists together with others in Munich. They were often drawn for work and inspiration to Murnau, where the museum still shows a number of their works.
