Almost anywhere east of the Great Divide in Queensland, it seems you are never far away from a wildlife sanctuary and the opportunity to see (or cuddle) a koala. Brisbane is no different, hosting the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, the oldest and the largest in the world. Having opened in 1927 and now housing around 130 of the famously adorable, yet utterly pea-brained tree dwellers, it offers a fine introduction, or reminder, of how unique Australia’s wildlife really is. Also on display are the equally ubiquitous and marginally more bush-wise wombats, echidnas, kangaroos and the latest addition, ‘Barak’ the platypus.
