Greymouth enjoyed the former colonial names of Crescent City and Blaketown, before its present name (given in honour of the former New Zealand Governor, Sir George Grey) finally stuck. Not surprisingly its creation centred principally on gold prospecting and mining, but unlike so many of the other west coast settlements that diminished with its exhaustion, Greymouth continued to thrive. This was due to the coal and timber industries, sound communication links and its status as the region’s principal port. But its watery affairs have not all been smooth sailing. The Grey River Valley receives some of the heaviest rainfall in the country and on more than one occasion the town has been badly flooded.
