Just north of Wellington, SH1 slices its way through the hills of a major fault-line and passes the rather dull town of Porirua before joining the picturesque Kapiti coastline. For the next 30 km the small coast and inland settlements of Paekakariki, Waikanae and Otaki are shadowed by Kapiti Island on one side and the Tararua Forest Park on the other. Kapiti Island is well worth a visit while Paekakariki, Paraparaumu and Waikanae offer a number of interesting local sights and activities. Otaki is the principal access point to the Tararua Forest Park.

Getting there
Paekakariki, Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Otaki are all on SH1 and the main rail line. The main bus companies and TranzMetro trains stop at these centres. The regional trains to and from Paraparaumu run frequent day and evening services and are relatively cheap. A day rover ticket costs $10. Contact Metlink, T0800-801700, for information. It is also worth considering the Metlink Explorer Pass which allows a day of unlimited travel on regional buses and trains along the Kapiti Coast for $15.
