Wellington

New Zealand's cultural & creative capital has it all - city life and stunning sea- and landscapes just a stone's throw away from great shopping, tons of cafés and culture...

Crammed onto every last usable meter of hilly land encircling the often stormy harbour of the same name, Wellington, the windswept capital city of New Zealand, justifiably lays claim to the title of national cultural hub. On arrival, ditch your bags, grab a scarf, and take the cable car from Lambton Quay to the top of the Botanic Gardens to get yourself orientated.

By day, the Parliament buildings (especially the iconic ‘Beehive’), the City Gallery (home to a rotating collection of contemporary New Zealand art) and the glittering, interactive Te Papa (aka the National Museum of New Zealand) provide ample distractions for the visitor. Those looking for a souvenir won’t be disappointed either, with Wellington playing host to a disproportionately large fashion and creative design community. From the heaving clubs and restaurants of Courtney Place, the Cuba Mall with its buskers and world famous (in New Zealand) Matterhorn, or slick, intimate back-alley bars, the Wellington nightlife is one of the best in the country.

Moving on from Wellington, the South Island of New Zealand is a scenic four hour ferry ride away, while heading north by road or rail opens up the lower North Island.

I was in Wellingtown for 2 weeks and I loved the laid back feel of the city, the tiny cafes and the friendly people. Take a walk along the wharf and Oriental Parade on a sunny day as the view is spectacular! Ensure u include a day trip to Day's Beach, Paraparamu and Island Bay too. I'll definitely be back!-Su from singapore
