Waitomo and the caves

The district of Waitomo (‘wai’ water and ‘tomo’ hole), with its underground wonder- world of limestone caves, is the region’s (and one of the North Island’s) biggest tourist attractions. Above ground, the typical farmland and the tourist village itself almost completely belie what is hidden below. Although only the geologically trained eye would suspect it, there is an astonishing network of over 360 recorded caves in the area, the longest over 14 km. If you don’t mind getting wet, you should promise yourself that you will try at least one of the amazing underground activities, beyond the highly commercial tour of Glow-worm Cave. Wherever you go, it is pretty unforgettable.
