Gore, on the banks of the Mataura River, is Southland’s second largest town and most famous for its unusual mix of trout fishing, country music and formerly (we can only presume) illegal whisky distilling. So although you might think the place to be a just another quiet backwater, beware. At times, particularly during the 10-day annual New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards , sleepy Gore can go off like Dolly Parton in a lingerie shop. During the festival both amateur and professional artists compete, while the true fanatics get the chance to dust off their cowboy boots and line dance the night away.
