Kaitaia is the main rural service centre for the Far North. It is predominantly Maori with an interesting smattering of Dalmatian blood – mainly Croats who came during the kauri gum boom years of the late 1800s. For the tourist it provides a gateway to the Aupouri Peninsula, with its famous, uninterrupted sweep of Ninety Mile Beach to Cape Reinga and North Cape, the northernmost tip of New Zealand.
