Kawau Island

Kawau Island is a popular holiday resort 8 km off the coast on the Mahurangi Peninsula. In summer its sheltered bays are almost more popular than terra firma, as yachties from far and wide drop anchor to enjoy the surroundings, fish, swim, dive or party long into the wee small hours. In pre-European times the island was the headquarters of Maori raiders who made numerous attacks on surrounding tribes from their villages and pa.
