If you have time, an exploration of the pretty Aorere River Valley (Heaphy Track Road) is recommended. Beyond the pleasures of the drive itself, a stop at the river gorge at Salisbury Bridge (Quartz Range Road) and the old Bainham Store will both have the camera clicking. Access down to the river is possible, to the left just beyond Salisbury Bridge, while the Bainham Store is an original, store that has changed little in decades and is still open for business.
