Featherston is the southern gateway to the Wairarapa (or the last settlement depending on which way you came) and sits in the shadow of the Rimutaka Range that was, and continues to be, the ‘great divider’ between the Wairarapa and Wellington. Featherston is best known as the 1870s base of operations, in the mammoth task of connecting the Wairarapa and Wellington by rail.
As you leave the Wairarapa by road (or indeed arrive) a fine departing (or introductory) view can be seen from the Rimutaka Trig (725 m) at the crest of the ranges road. The track (one hour return) starts beside the road, just below the summit café, on the Wellington side. From the top you will get a great view of Lake Wairarapa and the coast.
