Martinborough is located towards the coast from SH2, 16 km southeast of Greytown. It is not dissimilar to Greytown but enjoys its country location and a quiet town square more (as opposed to the bustling SH2). First settled by a nationalistic Briton, John Martin in the late 1880s, the village square and the streets running off it form the shape of the Union Jack. With names like Kansas, Texas and Ohio, it is clear that Martin had as much a love of the US as he did his homeland. Described as a unique ‘wine village’, with 20 vineyards within walking distance of the square, and blessed with as many charming B&Bs, it is a favourite romantic haunt for Wellingtonians in search of a quiet weekend followed by a savage headache on the Monday morning.
