Although gold mining once flourished all around the Coromandel, Waihi was in many ways the capital of operations, with 1200 mines producing half of the country’s gold. The scale of operations earned Waihi the reputation as the most famous mining town in New Zealand. The town itself, although well-serviced, is nothing remarkable, but it boasts a heart of gold and seems to retain a sort of Wild West feel.
