From east to west the first settlement of any significance is Duntroon. With the discovery of gold in 1868 the town enjoyed a brief boom, before the diggings proved a failure, earning them the label of the ‘poor man’s field’. After a return to relative obscurity, there was more excitement with the discovery of a quartz reef between the Maerewhenua and Otekaike rivers in 1870, but once again, this was short-lived.
