Auckland

With a population of one and a quarter million, Auckland is Polynesia’s largest city and by far the biggest in New Zealand. Thanks to its spacious suburban sprawl, Auckland covers more than 500 sq km – twice that of London and close to that of Los Angeles – but because the city is built on an isthmus and constantly fragmented by coastline, you are never far from water. As a result, the sea pervades almost every aspect of Auckland life, from recreation to cuisine. The city has more recreational boats per capita than any other in the world, earning it the affectionate nickname of ‘City of Sails’ and most sailing is done in Auckland’s backyard – the beautiful aquatic playground and island-studded waters of the Hauraki Gulf, one of the most beautiful sailing venues in the world.

For the vast majority of visitors, Auckland will be their arrival point and their first introduction to the country. Many will treat it merely as a gateway to better things, but they may be pleasantly surprised by what it has to offer. As well as sailing, you can go fishing, swimming or surfing within minutes of the city centre and, in some places, have the beach to yourself. The city also boasts some impressive man-made attractions such as the stunning 360° views from the hypodermic Sky Tower, and its bustling city centre streets and trendy suburbs are home to a thousand high quality restaurants.

Nice city, a must for first time in NZ, but definitely not one of first things I would visit in New Zealand next time.
