Newtown

South beyond the university is King Street, the hub of Newtown’s idiosyncratic range of shops, cafés and restaurants. Here you can purchase anything from a black leather codpiece to an industrial-size brass Buddha, drool over the menus of a vast range of interesting eateries, or simply idle over a latte and watch a more alternative world go by. A few hours’ exploration, Sunday brunch or an evening meal in Newtown’s King Street is recommended. Don’t miss Gould’s Book Arcade at 32 King Street, www.goulds books.com.au, which is an experience in itself.

To get here take the bus from Loftus Street on Circular Quay, or George Street (Nos 422, 423, 426, 428). The Newtown Railway Station is on the Inner West/Bankstown (to Liverpool) lines.
