‘The Prom’, as it is known by Victorians, is one of the state’s top attractions, with granite-capped mountains covered in forest sloping down to the purest of white sand beaches and tannin-stained rivers meandering down to the sea. The northeastern region is a wilderness area only accessible to bushwalkers and boats. The park’s most accessible beaches and bushwalks are on the western coast near Tidal River, the only ‘settlement’, where parrots, wombats and kangaroos roam (and fly) around freely. The year 2005 saw two notable events on The Prom, first in summer when wildfires decimated the region, and then, ironically, the first snowfalls in years in August.
