Nature lovers should take a look at the large (and smelly) flying fox (fruit bat) colony on Bellingen Island (which is now no longer an island) beside the river, within easy walking distance of the village. The best place to see the bats is from the Bellingen Caravan Park on Dowle Street (cross the Bridge off Hyde, on to Hammond then turn right in to Dowle), while the best time is around dusk when they depart to find food. But even during the day it is an impressive sight indeed as they hang like a thousand fuzzy Christmas decorations from almost every tree.
