Tjapukai, pronounced ‘Jaboguy’, is an award-winning, multimillion dollar Aboriginal Cultural Park lauded as one of the best its kind in Australia. It is the culmination of many years of quality performance by the local Tjapukai tribe. The 11-ha site, located next to the Skyrail terminal in Smithfield, offers an entertaining and educational insight into Aboriginal mythology, customs and history and, in particular, that of the Tjapukai. The complex is split into various dynamic theatres that explore dance, language, storytelling and history and there is also a mock-up camp where you can learn about traditional tools, food and hunting techniques. For many, the highlight is the opportunity to learn how to throw a boomerang or to play a didgeridoo properly without asphyxiating. To make the most of the experience give yourself at least half a day. Tjapukai also offers a new ‘Tjapukai by Night experience’, which begins at 1930 with an interactive, traditional and dramatic corroboree ritual, which is followed by an impressive buffet of regional foods and an entertaining stage show. Transfers are readily available for an extra charge and there’s a shop and quality restaurant (breakfast from $16, buffet lunch from $25).
