Although Cape Tribulation is the name attributed to a small settlement and headland that forms the main tourist focus of the region, the term itself is loosely used to describe a 40-km stretch of coastline within Daintree National Park and the start of the Bloomfield Track to Cooktown.
It was Captain Cook who bestowed the name, just before his ship Endeavour ran aground here in 1770. The name ‘Tribulation’ and others such as Mount Sorrow, Mount Misery and Darkie’s Downfall, are indeed fitting for a place of such wild and, at times, inhospitable beauty. People come to this remote wilderness not only to witness a rainforest rich in flora and fauna, but also to experience nature in the raw.
