The small, arty settlement of Kuranda has become the main tourist attraction in the Atherton Tablelands, thanks to its proximity to Cairns, a scenic railway and its markets. But while there’s no doubting its appeal, particularly the spectacular means of access, Kuranda has, to a large extent, become a victim of its own popularity. The town was first put on the map in 1891 with the completion of the railway, providing a vital link between the Hodgkinson Gold Fields and the coast.
If you did not arrive in Kuranda via the Skyrail or railway and it is the wet season then take a look at the Barron Falls, which can be accessed via Barron Falls Road (Wrights Lookout) south of the town. In ‘the wet’ the floodgates are opened above the falls and the results can be truly spectacular.
