Buriram is small, unassuming and, in all senses, provincial. However, a new airport has recently opened in Buriram (30 km northeast of town). It makes a good base to visit the Khmer ruins at Phnom Rung and Muang Tam, yet few people stay here, preferring to travel from the larger city of Korat. Pink buses criss-cross the town (฿฿5 for any distance) and there are tuk-tuks (฿฿10-20) if you need to get around. The railway station can be found at the end of Romburi Road, near the centre of town.
Khao Krudong is a 300-m volcanic cinder cone 8 km southeast of town. To get there take a songthaew in the morning from the station near the market, off Sriphet Road. The hill, rising up from the surrounding rice plain, is a holy place and is crowned by a white 20-m-high statue of the Buddha. The views from the summit are best at sunset (although public transport is limited in the afternoon).
