Wat Traimit

A Buddha built from five tons of solid gold

Dating back from the 13th century, the Golden Buddha has been considered practically worthless for a great deal of its life. The Thai had shrouded the Buddha in plaster to deceive Burmese conquerors, but as time went on, its true gold nature faded from the public memory. By chance, one day in 1957 it was mishandled during transport from one temple to the next and abandoned by workmen. It was discovered the next morning in the mud by a monk whose dream the night before had compelled him to search out the Buddha figure. A break in the plaster revealed a hint of gold, and ever since, the Temple of the Golden Buddha has been mobbed with tourists and pilgrims alike.
