Tetouan

Medina of Tetouan: Small alleys wind through the town and visitors can immerse themselves in the country

Set between the Rif and the Mediterranean Sea, Tetouan has a dramatic beauty, the white buildings of the médina contrasting with the backdrop of the mountains. There’s some impressive colonial architecture in the Spanish town and the médina has been made a UNESCO Heritage Site. The city is an interesting place to explore, albeit with more noise and hassle than Chefchaouen to the south. Tetouan’s main sites can be covered in a rather rushed half day; a full day would give you time to explore the city pretty thoroughly. Between Ceuta and Tetouan, and also further round the coast, there are a number of resorts – some fashionable, others with a more downbeat appeal – which can be visited en route or as an excursion from the city.
