Asilah, 40 km south of Tangier (and also referred to as Arzila), is a striking fishing port and coastal town of white and blue houses, surrounded by ramparts and lying alongside an extensive beach. It is the northernmost of the former Portuguese outposts (the others include Azemmour, El Jadida and Safi). A small place with a Mediterranean feel, Asilah might provide a pleasant introduction to Morocco, in spite of the extent to which tourism dominates. If you turn up in August you’ll coincide with the annual influx of people for the International Festival of Asilah, which usually includes jazz and Moroccan music, and exhibitions by contemporary Moroccan artists.
