With none of the hassle of Tangier, yet some of its European sophistication, it’s not surprising that coastal Asilah has become a firm fixture on many tourists’ itineraries. Beautifully whitewashed, its old fortified Portuguese centre makes a good spot for a peaceful couple of days by the sea. Further south, Larache is much less discovered but has some of the same architectural attractions in the winding streets of its médina, and, across the estuary, some evocative ancient Roman remains at Lixus.
