The one-time favourite hippy destination of Diabat, about 5 km from Essaouira, is easily reached by petit and grand taxi, for around 40dh. The ruined palace/pavilion below Diabat is worth a visit. The building is said to have been swallowed by the sand after the people of the Souss put a curse on it as their trade was being ruined. The old fort was built by the Portuguese in the 18th century. A short walk up the road from Diabat will bring you to the Auberge Tangaro, one of Essaouira’s better known hotels; 500 m further on, and you are at the crossroads with the N1 road from the south, which runs back into town.
